This Fish Doesn't Stink

In all honesty, I can probably count the documentaries I've seen in my lifetime on two hands, if even that.  Unless I hear that it is the movie to see, I would rather spend my time watching fiction (or even fiction based on a true story).

When I first heard about CATFISH. The title alone made me not want to see it. Why on earth would I want to watch a movie about fish. The poster featured a pixilated fish and a mouse cursor clicking on it. The words "Don't Let Anyone Tell You What It Is" are plastered in block letters in the middle of the page. Otherwise, that was it.  It wasn't until I actually watched the trailer for the movie, however, that I realized this documentary actually looks interesting.  The poster did the movie little justice.

Luckily for the technogically advanced world we are in, and the creation of social media sites like Facebook and Twitter, buzz and viral marketing was able to get the word out about the movie in ways that would not happend just a few years ago.  Up until recently, there were not even any 30 second tv spots.  After attending an advance screening of the film, I asked some of the movie goers how they found out about the screening or if they had heard about the film beforehand. Their answer: Facebook or Twitter.

It is amazing how something so simple and FREE can be so helpful in the movie marketing industry.  I bet the three guys who made the documentary are floored by the outstanding success this film has gained so far, and it only being the second or third week in theaters. Slowly, more and more theaters are booking it, instead of the usual Los Angeles, New York, or Chicago.

I must say, this movie is one of my favorite documentaries I've seen. It was extremely thought-provoking and a tad bit creepy. I urge everyone to see it if they get a chance, but please make sure you "don't let anyone tell you what it is."
